Nutritional Therapy & Coaching

Build A Stronger Core

Ask any fitness buff or trainer and they’ll all tell you the same thing: Core Health is Essential. Whether you’re trying to sculpt six pack abs or cut a svelt midsection, it takes willingness and work.

But before we aim for a desired level of performance and output, it’s imperative that we asses our input - specifically, the quality of our fuel.

Core Health Starts in the Gut

Gut health is associated with our ability to absorb nutrients and process them for various functions throughout the body. But it doesn’t end there. Your gut is also responsible for neurotransmitter production and direct communication with brain structures and related functions: processing, behavior, emotional regulation, and communication. Through research and clinical experience, functional medicine practitioners have learned the way your body perceives and copes with stress is linked to your enteric nervous system. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, dementia, and autoimmune dysfunction are effected by dysbiosis in the gut, and demonstrate a positive shift when the microbiota is rebalanced through lifestyle and dietary modifications.

Your Gut Is Your Access Point for Health & Performance

After 18 years of working in Western Medicine, I’ve observed and worked with so many body types and varied chronic conditions. I’ve realized that one individual’s idea of “health” or “clean eating” can look very different than the next. Furthermore, the mold which produces results for one client does not always fit the same on another. This is why when we practice medicine, it should never be cookbook - and when it comes to Nutritional Therapy - we specifically need to customize our own cookbooks.

When we can assess multiple factors like past medical history, body chemistry, level of activity, nutrient absorption, deficiencies, as well as emotional states, motivators, habits, triggers, and energy imbalance, we can unlock total health through the access point of the gut and unravel the convoluted roots of multiple conditions, setting a positive shift toward optimal health in motion.

A Recipe for Success

As a Nutritional Therapist and Coach, I’ve found that success lies in a 1:1 or focused group counseling approach. After a foundational intake and assessment, we begin with a re-education and re-introduction to the concept of health and peak performance based on evidence based research and clinical experience.

As we begin to introduce small, comfortable shifts and gradual deletions, substitutions, and changes over time, we lay the groundwork of healthy habits and routines. In order to make these shifts stick, it’s vital to understand the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ which coaching provides. This makes it easier to navigate and make impromptu decisions when faced with personal food choices - because, life happens. Clients are held accountable with check-ins, and have access to meal planning and grocery restructuring strategies as well as “real time” questions and communications.

Targeted Goals

As a Physician Assistant, I am able to review and analyze blood work. This additional support can be helpful in many target situations. For example, if you’re hesitant to initiate a cholesterol medication and your physician has given you a specific time frame to bring your LDL to a desired range. Perhaps you’d like to be less reliant on Blood Pressure or Diabetic Medications? Maybe you want to change your eating habits to reduce anxiety or other behavioral conditions? All of these examples can be mitigated with proper diet and nutrition in many cases; however, it is invaluable to understand when and for who this is appropriate or inappropriate due to the risks involved.

In building a strong core of health, the goal is actually to optimize your body to do less ‘work’, more effectively. ‘Work’ implies resistance, and challenge; however, in removing barriers and obstacles to your body’s most efficient and healthful state, you will not only build a stronger core, but you’ll understand how to maintain core health with minimal effort and maximum benefit.
